Stop Overbuying!

Too Much Stuff? It Might Be Time to Stop Overbuying

How to Shop Smarter, Save Space, and Feel More Organised at Home

Let’s be honest — have you ever bought something during your weekly food shop just because it was on special offer? You’re not alone. Whether it’s in-store or part of an online grocery delivery, many of us are guilty of buying more than we need — “just in case.”

In a recent consultation, a lovely client described herself as an “over-stocker,” and it’s something I hear often.

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of grabbing extras during a supermarket trip or bulk ordering from an online shop. Those 3-for-2 deals and big multi-packs are tempting! And if you can’t quite remember what’s already in your cupboards at home, it’s even easier to justify adding it “just in case.” Before you know it, you’ve bought something you didn’t really need — again — and it ends up buried behind everything else.

Why More Isn’t Always Better

While buying in bulk can sometimes save money, it’s worth asking: what’s the real cost?

  • Lost space in your cupboards and fridge
  • Forgotten or expired food items
  • Feelings of overwhelm or wastefulness
  • A kitchen that feels chaotic instead of calm

What if, instead, we let the shops do the storing for us? Most of us shop on a weekly basis and have easy access to supermarkets or online grocery delivery services. There’s no need to keep everything under our own roof.

Simple Habits That Make a Big Difference

  • Never shop for food when you’re hungry
It leads to impulse buys that aren’t always necessary or nutritious.
  • Make a note the moment you run out of something
Keeping an ongoing list helps you replace only what’s truly needed.
  • Meal plan each week
This reduces impulse buying and ensures everything you purchase has a purpose.
  • Try to use up what you already have
Check your fridge, freezer, and pantry before you shop. Avoiding duplicates saves space and money — and prevents food waste.

4 Questions to Ask Before You Buy

  1. Do I really need it?
Is there already something similar waiting to be used? (Check the cupboards before you buy.)
  2. Do I have space to store it?
Will it get buried at the back of a shelf or left out on the counter?
  3. Can I get it again easily?
If it’s something you can find any time, you probably don’t need to buy in bulk.
  4. Will I use it before it expires?
Especially important for perishable items and anything with a short shelf life.

Mindful Shopping = A Calmer Home

By buying only what you need, when you need it, you create more physical space, reduce food waste, and take some stress out of mealtimes. This small shift in how you approach grocery shopping can have a big impact on how your kitchen — and your home — feels.

Over-buying isn’t a failure — it’s a habit. And habits can be changed with a little awareness and intention.

Come back and remind yourself of these ideas until they are habits and you don’t need the friendly reminders.
